Once you learn how to draw a dog portrait, you could then use that drawing as the beginning of a painting of your dog!

You might even want to combine the two ideas to draw your own creative artwork! For example, a century ago, artist C.M. Coolidge created a famous series of oil paintings to advertise cigars featuring dogs playing poker. Coolidge's paintings featured realistic depictions of the animals, but put them in an unlikely "people" situation to create a humorous piece. Not only did Coolidge's pictures become famous in their own right, they've inspired many similar works over the last hundred years. What could you come up with by combining the ability to draw realistic animals and the creativity of cartooning? With enough practice and the power of imagination, the sky's the limit!

Once you master the basics of drawing dogs, you'll find the possibilities are endless.

If you're drawing a cartoon dog, do you want to draw one that walks and acts like a dog, like Scooby Doo, or one that walks and acts like a person, more like Snoopy. Disney's cartoons have both - Goofy is Mickey's friend, while Pluto is his pet! Do you want to draw a full-grown adult, or would you rather draw a puppy? Do you want the dogs in your drawings to be posing, like in a portrait, or would you rather draw them in action?

What breed of dog would you like to draw?

Some of the most popular breeds include beagles, bulldogs, dachshunds, poodles and shih tzus, and all of these look very different from each other!
